Charges have been laid against a Brampton truck driver and a Mississauga-based company after two wheels detached from a transport truck’s trailer on an Ontario highway.
The incident occurred on May 12 at around 5:30 p.m., when an officer from the James Bay OPP detachment spotted a transport truck losing two wheels while patrolling Highway 11 in Mattice-Val Côté, roughly 230 kilometres west of Timmins. The trailer also caught fire during the incident.
Police were able to extinguish the flames, and an investigation revealed that a complete failure of the front axle hub on the passenger side of the trailer had caused the fire and wheel separation.
As a result, a 27-year-old Brampton driver was charged with several offences, including operating a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in the towed trailer and failing to properly complete a daily inspection report.
The Mississauga company responsible for the truck was also charged with multiple infractions, including wheel separation from a commercial motor vehicle, operating a commercial vehicle with a detached part, and failing to meet performance standards.
The accused are scheduled to appear in court in Hearst on July 15.
