Noteworthy Observations and Safety Advice
Peel Police noted that certain types of properties are more frequently targeted—particularly corner lots, homes backing onto parks or open spaces, and residences that appear unoccupied or poorly maintained.
“Residential break-ins are usually crimes of opportunity,” police said. “Burglars often choose targets that offer a lower risk of being caught.”
To reduce the risk of break-ins, police recommend residents:
Trim shrubs and hedges to maintain clear visibility of all accessible doors and windows
Keep garage and screen doors locked, even when at home
Build relationships with neighbors and keep an eye on each other’s homes
Consider installing secondary locks on windows and sliding doors
