Cycling enthusiasts of all experience levels are being invited to take part in the inaugural Share the Road Gran Fondo, a fundraising ride happening on August 17, starting at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ontario.
Organized by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, the event aims to raise funds to support its mission of improving road safety and cycling infrastructure across Ontario. Since its founding in 2007 in memory of OPP Sgt. Greg Stobbart—who was tragically killed while cycling—the coalition has become a leading advocate for cyclist safety, successfully pushing for legislative reforms and significant investment in bike-friendly infrastructure.

Among its key achievements: three changes to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, $125 million in municipal cycling infrastructure, the Bicycle Friendly Communities program, and the annual Ontario Bike Summit. The coalition also collaborates with CAA South Central Ontario and the Ontario Provincial Police on educational campaigns promoting road safety and cyclist awareness.
Looking ahead, the organization is working on a province-wide cycling education program, especially aimed at youth. Modeled on driving education standards, this initiative is set to launch pilot programs next year, with curriculum and instructor tools being developed this fall.
The new Gran Fondo was created in response to growing support and demand for active involvement in the coalition’s work. With cycling gaining momentum across the province, the call for improved safety, education, and legislative backing has never been louder.
Event proceeds will directly fund initiatives to make Ontario’s roads safer and more accessible for cyclists.
“This is more than a ride—it’s a movement,” said Eleanor McMahon, founder and board chair of Share the Road. “Every pedal stroke is a step toward safer roads and stronger communities. Greg trained on these very roads, and it’s an honour to carry on this mission in his memory.”
Participants can choose from 40 km, 80 km, or 110 km routes winding through the scenic landscapes of Halton Hills. Each route features a mix of challenging climbs and relaxing stretches, complete with rest stops and support along the way.
Whether you’re a veteran cyclist or just ride for fun, the Share the Road Gran Fondo offers a chance to enjoy the ride while helping shape the future of cycling in Ontario.
